So who do you think is the greatest Rock Band EVER!

Bands can kick ass for a few years, then they end up dying their goatees pink and all of a sudden they need guitar lessons or something.

But I will tell you a band, at a moment in time, with a certain lineup, that
hs been my favorite for decades.. Rainbow's Long Live Rock and Roll.
It had Dio, Ritchie Blackmore (see? he's the one who kicked ass on 1 album
then lost all skills the next day,) Cozy Powell on drums, Bob Daisley on bass
& Lee Kerslake on keyboard. So you put 4 gods with a guy with a guitar, and
you get the greatest rock band ever! :)

Maybe this one? (although I don't remember hearing that message, not consciously anyway lol)

"The Great Gig in the Sky" is the fifth track[nb 1] on The Dark Side of the Moon, the 1973 album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It features voice instrumental music by Clare Torry. The song is frequently called "one of the best rock records of all time". -wikipedia

I know this thread was started a while ago, but I figured I'd put my two
cents in.. I don't think there is one greatest rock band ever, but I have my favorites - Among them are The Doobie Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Rush,
Dire Straits (although perhaps they were a bit more 'pop'-ish), and Pink
Floyd. I'm sure there are others I've left out.

hmm.. My list is heavily classic rock, and pretty much all of those bands
got started before I was born. There aren't many more recent rock bands I really like, although I liked Blue Man Group's "The Complex" album (from
    2003, I believe).

Rush, Dire Straits (although perhaps they were a bit more 'pop'-ish)

Dire Straits stuff is spectacular. The only album I don't have is "Making Movies"..."Communique" is awesome to listen to end to end.

I've always felt like they're almost their own genre. I wouldn't call it Rock, necessarily, other than their well known stuff (Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, etc...) I'm not really sure what it is, but I like it. A lot.

Just found "Love over Gold" on CD at a thirft store the other day for only $2.

I like Communique, and it's definitely a great album. Their first album, though, is the one I typically listen to end to end most often.

I've always felt like they're almost their own genre. I wouldn't call it Rock, necessarily, other than their well known stuff (Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, etc...) I'm not really sure what it is, but I like it. A lot.

Yeah, I've often thought a lot of Dire Straits music seems to mix genres - A little bit of rock, blues, soft rock/easy listening, and even a little country.

Mark Knopfler has continued making music as a solo artist, and I enjoy much of what he has released since his Dire Straits days. His music has gotten a lot more mellow over the years, but I still like his music overall. "Sailing To Philadelphia" and "The Ragpicker's Dream" are probably two of my favorite of his albums as a solo artist. I'm going to see Mark Knopfler live on September 13 and am looking forward to that.

Just found "Love over Gold" on CD at a thirft store the other day for only $2.

That's a good deal. I still prefer to buy music on CDs, and I enjoy the fact that it's easy to find many music CDs at low cost. Typically I buy them on Amazon - For most CDs, you can find people selling used copies, even in great condition, for cheap.

Agreed. I just love music, period. 60's, 70's & 80's are my favs. I was born in the 60's so i was always listening to AM radio. The formats were fairly free form meaning it was acceptable to hear rock, pop, R&B, folk and dance songs together, one right after another. So many great bands/musicians/songs.

It's a great topic and deep too! So many variables that make bands/musicians great. I liked the fact that you brought up the Doobie Bros. My Dad turned me on to them back in the 70's. I can still see him singing & playing "Long Train Runnin'", on his black Gibson. One of the many great memories of my Dad.

    Anyway...great thread.

I was so blown away by the level of musicianship. You know how sometimes it can be a letdown seeing some of your favorite bands perform years later but not these guys. Line-up changes be damned! :) They were so so good. If i catch it again i'll be able to tell you channel, place, etc. Most likely on DVD someplace.

Speaking of bands that still have it after all these years; just the other night i caught a show on the tube of REO & CHICAGO performing at Red Rock.
OMG! Just fantastic. Don't have the words. Speaking of laughing, folks will prolly give me a hard time for saying it was a spiritual experience listening. They split time on stage and even combined their talents for the audience by performing each others music together. Again, the vocals and musicianship are top-shelf. You should be able to get blank tapes from National Audio Company (NAC). There's another manufacturer in the UK, and few others.

For music on tape, check out Burger Records. There has been a bit of a revival of C-cassettes recently, especially as band merchandise. It was mentioned that people buy cassettes to support a band, even if they have no means to play the cassettes themselves!

    There's something about it.

Did you never record songs from the radio, or make your own mix tapes or
other audio recordings? I think cassette tapes were still the most
convenient way to record audio into the mid-late 90s, perhaps until digital recording on PCs got better and storage got cheaper.

I think the last time I really used a cassette tape was maybe 1992 or 1993. More recently, though (just several ago) I pulled out a few of my cassette tapes because I had some recordings that I wanted to record on my PC in a digital format.

yeah i did that pre 87. then cds became popular and they said the prices were going to drop after the cost of manufacturing decreased but it never happened.

most music tapes cost 8-10 bucks.

    for sound, nothing beats records.

The debate over sound quality of records has been beaten to death.. I personally don't like the pops, crackles, and hissing you get from records. Digital media, such as CD, SACD, and such doesn't have any of that and lasts a lot longer. I've heard some people say that CDs don't sound as warm as records, but my understanding is that (at least theoretically), according to the NyQuist theorem, if the sampling rate is at least double the highest frequency in the audio, a digital recording should be able to faithfully reproduce the same sound that was recorded. So theoretically, a digital recording should be able to capture the same quality of audio that a record has.

Even so, I had given some thought to possibly buying one of these laser turntables, which plays records using a laser instead of a needle so that the record doesn't get worn out with physical contact:
    http://elpj.com/
I also imagine that it probably wouldn't have the pops & crackles you typically get with a needle, at least with brand-new records. However, those laser record players are a bit too expensive for me to want to buy one now.

Never found out why but ZZ Top made for it! My amigo was so angry GFR didn't show but slowly forgot about i as things progressed. Must have been something in the air. ;) Watching

Glad to see a fellow fan of Grand Funk. The 3 originals really Rocked. Not m people know they sold out Shea Stadium. Tunes like Inside Looking Out and Heartbreaker sound awesome for a 3 man band. I wasn't impressed when they we commercial with American Band. Mark Farners story about how they went broke also a tough one. They really did play because they loved to. Oooof. Gime Shelter just came on..L8ta

I saw ZZ Top at Madison Square Garden in 1980! That was a wild concert. I
went there with a friend, and a girl I was messing around with. After the concert we walked back to my apartment in chelsea (23rd Street & 7th Ave) for
a bit before I drove them home (to different homes). My all time favorite
band would have to be Jethro Tull. While many band members have changed over the years the lead singer and guitar player have been with the band since the 1960's, which is a fairly long time! I've been to many Tull concerts, even
one in 1978 that ened up being recorded for a live album! I don't know if there's such a thing as a 'natural high' but I'm starting to believe there
is, as I quit drugs & alcohol in 1986 and I've been to many Tull concerts
since then, yet I can never remember anything about them afterwards!

I simply don't believe that your records have never exhibited any hiss or pops. No matter how well you treat records, the fact that there's a needle physically sliding across the surface of the record will create a little bit of hiss (which is the sound of the needle sliding on the record) and will create some amount of pops and crackles after being played repeatedly over time due to scraping the record. It's unavoiadable that a vinyl record will degrade over time - unless you use a player that uses a laser instead of a needle as in the link I shared in my previous message.

Here's a video showing close-ups of record groove wear from a record being played multiple times:

EVERY time I've ever played a record or listened to a recording of a record, I've noticed hiss and pops. Even if it's fairly minor, it bugs me a bit.

i played my grandmother's records and i dont recall any annoying pops either.

i dont recall any sound artifacts except perhaps when there was 'silence' between songs or the beginning or end of a record and that wasnt that bad.

I knew a guy that when he would play a record he would always play it wet. He would actually take a washcloth that was wet, and run it over the entire surface of the record making sure the surface was good and wet (lots of water in the grooves) before playing the record. He swore that it eliminated pops * hiss, etc. He was into classical music, and was a real music snob (he thought rock music was just noise), but whenever I listened to records he played I couldn't hear any pops hiss, etc. so maybe he had something? Was that because they were too hardcore at the time? Now, it's almost impossible to hear Slayer or even Megadeth on the radio because people only want to hear the stuff their used to. But why are thy used to what their used to?

There are many people who genuinely like those bands though. I tend to like the Beatles' music, even though I was born after the group split up. I agree with you, though, that there must be some kind of deals between radio stations and music groups to decide which music to play on the radio. Sometimes I wonder why only certain songs become well-known hits - Is it because people really like the song better than the group's other songs, or is it because that's the group's song that the radio stations decided to play the most? It might be a little of both. And a musical group's hit can be a catch-22: It's popular (or rather, infamous) because it's played on the radio a lot, and radio stations play it a lot because it's popular.

Sometimes I've bought a group's album that contained a particular hit and found that I liked many of the other songs on the album too. But other times, I've found that their well-known hit really was the only song I like on their album.

Hell's Bells... Helluvagood Cheese? Or "Hmm, that sounds like a crow! I'm gonna buy the new Black Crows CD!" Or depressing sounding songs like "Wild Horses" possibly makes people feel sad, so they buy flowers for someone.
Maybe that song will be followed by a 1-800-FLOWERS commercial?

It bothers me because I get stuck driving around a alot, and I wish it could
be like the old days when I lived in NY and the radio stations had more variety. Especially back in the 80s, they'd play Madonna, and then play Quiet Riot, like they believed it all belonged on the same station - and it was great! Now it's ACDC, Metallica, Rolling Stones, STP, and then repeat, then puke, then repeat again.

Does STP really have any fans? I mean, do ppl really like that crap? I doubt it!

it on, it's the same few songs or it's some fuckheads chuckling and playing sound effects(morning shows).

I hate morning shows too! There's a DJ in Albuquerque (Swammy Rob or
something) and he talks through his nose and it sounds like some serious boogers and hair need to be removed! And the stuff that he says is so stupid.
I used to enjoy Howard Stern in the morning, but no other host has ever been interesting.

So, all this hatred for the radio has lead me to listen to the classical station, the pop station, the hip hop station, and the same ol' cds over and over.

I know that I could kick all radio DJ's asses, entertainmentwise. If I don't have anything interesting to say, I'dbe playing B sides to albums all the
    time.

That's great advice Mike. You're not alone. My heart gave out on me in 2011. Before that my doc told me the same thing. "Your like a 75 year old man" I was 55 (I think). Had the whole deal done, Valve replacement, Arte bypass with pacemaker. I used to be able to do all sorts of networking etc.. Today I'm lucky to remember how to turn the damn thing on. I hate t admit it but all the drugs and alcohol caught up with me. We all have to "pay the piper" at some point. Nobody get's a "free ride". Thanks for the

    my hate keeps me alive.

I don't think I could deal with hate all the time, but a healthy dose of it sure helps! I believe in Teddy Roosevelt's line: talk softly (or was it walk softly?) and carry a big stick. I live in Florida, and got a license to carry
a concealed weapon almost as soon as FL made them available years ago, so my "Big Stick" holds 11 rounds of 45ACP and fits in one of my pockets!

It's interesting, having a handgun in my pocket has changed how I handle
myself while out in public, but not in the way you might think. I find that having deadly force available to me has made me much calmer, I tend to look
at situations where I might have been inclined to 'start something' in the past, and now in those situations I think "is it really worth getting into it over this?" and so far I've only had one situation where I felt threatened enough to pull out my pistol, and the confrontation ended right then without firing a single shot. I don't know if most CCW holders also feel this way or
if it's only me and a few others that I know, but if it is the majority then the country has nothing to fear from legally licensed gun owners!

Now how did I get from old age & computers to guns? Sorry for the topic
    drift!

Most great rock and roll is "overplayed". You hardly ever heard them the radio back in the early 70's.

Was that because they were too hardcore at the time? Now, it's almost impossible to hear Slayer or even Megadeth on the radio because people on want to hear the stuff their used to. But why are thy used to what their used to?

I think the radio stations have some kind of conspiracy with the musician they feature. They are TELLING us which bands we "like" for some reason. They used to tell us to like the Beatles, but now their focusing on ACDC Rolling Stones. There is money pouring out of the singers' mouths somehow but to me
it sounds more like Crows & David Bowie balls.

There are many people who genuinely like those bands though. I tend to like the Beatles' music, even though I was born after the group split up. I agre with you, though, that there must be some kind of deals between radio statio and music groups to decide which music to play on the radio. Sometimes I wonder why only certain songs become well-known hits - Is it because people really like the song better than the group's other songs, or is it because that's the group's song that the radio stations decided to play the most? I might be a little of both. And a musical group's hit can be a catch-22: It' popular (or rather, infamous) because it's played on the radio a lot, and ra stations play it a lot because it's popular.

Sometimes I've bought a group's album that contained a particular hit and fo that I liked many of the other songs on the album too. But other times, I'v found that their well-known hit really was the only song I like on their alb

    Nightfox

Actually in the past it was the record label that had deals with the radio stations. Or more correctly with the station's network. With some groups you can also hear a big difference in the recording quality of the songs that are going to become hits (or at least the ones the record label execs hope will
be a hit) compared to the other songs that are basically 'filler'. It's more apparent back in the 50's & 60's and not as much these days. Janis Joplin is
a perfect example, if you look at some of her earliest records the 1 or 2
songs that were top 40 hits were produced much better than the rest of the albun!

having a firearm on your person is a false sense of security for most people. someone can charge you from a reasonable distance before you can pull and ready your firearm.

not only that, but having a license says you have the right to carry one, not use it anytime. you have to have a damn good reason and you can not have it in a place like a bar.

personally i carry a telescoping baton when i am out and i have a large sum of money on my person. i have not had to use it yet. if i do use it, it's the same as any other deadly weapon. probably easier to throw and get rid of, though :D

I will agree, anyone that just gets a license and thinks that makes them 'qualified' to carry a gun probably should NOT carry one! In fact my mother also has a license, but won't carry until she learns how to properly shoot.

I LOVE your last line. There's no doubt it IS best not to get into dangerous situations. Unfortunately, we don't always have the option to aviod them.
From about 1994 thru 1999 I was the night time dispatcher of a small taxi company, working from 5PM to 5AM. The fleet was split between primarily 3 people that owned most of the cabs, and the drivers came in and dropped off their daily lease money in an envelope, and depending on which of the 3
owners depended on which draw in the desk the envelope went. That was it for security. As for security for the office itself, that was none existant too, there was a door, but I don't think it'd been closed in 20 years. During the day it wasn't a problem, there was a mechanic fixing cabs, and the boss, and various others always hanging around, but come around 3am, it was just me in
an 8'x10' room with a TV (no cable) a couple of telephones, a radio to
dispatch the calls to the cabs, and a desk full of money! Between me & the relief night dispatcher we worked out a method of hanging our guns under the desk, so we could grab them if needed without somebody coming thru the door seeing them. Luckily one of the owners went out into the yard one day and was using a utility pole as a backstop for some target shooting, so the local lowlifes more or less stayed away for the most part. But the point is, no matter what you do, you can't always stay away from danger, sometimes it just comes looking for you!

Yeah, I've seen that. Great scene.
I was thinking more of situations where someone might physically attack you up close, rather than someone attacking you with a gun. Also, as it has been stated, there are laws about carrying guns and using them in public.
I've often thought that shooting someone seems a little excessive for things, even if someone is breaking into your house.. My natural inclination would be to try to just give them a good scare so they'd stop and go away, or at least restrain them until police etc. arrive. If someone tries to get in a fight with you, pick your pocket, or even break into your home, does that really mean they deserve to be shot?

also it has a lot to do with personality type. there's people that freeze up, and there's people that ride out the stress and perform through it.

if someone that freezes up confronts another with a gun, that criminal just might end up getting a better gun or an extra one atleast.

not only that, but having a license says you have the right to carry >> one, not use it anytime. you have to have a damn good reason and
you can not have it in a place like a bar.

Those two reasons are why I've often thought it would be better to
    learn a martial art
rather than carry a gun. However that's easier said than done (and to
    be honest, I
have not studied a martial art, although I have often considered it).

    Nightfox

Have you ever seen the Indiana Jones movie (I forget which one the scen is in) where some guy comes doing all sorts of fancy moves, and Ford ju pulls out his gun and shoots him? That's a classic, but it's also true. All these people that think that martial arts can take down a person wi a gun should watch that clip.

Yeah, I've seen that. Great scene.
I was thinking more of situations where someone might physically attack you close, rather than someone attacking you with a gun. Also, as it has been stated, there are laws about carrying guns and using them in public.
I've often thought that shooting someone seems a little excessive for things even if someone is breaking into your house.. My natural inclination would to try to just give them a good scare so they'd stop and go away, or at leas restrain them until police etc. arrive. If someone tries to get in a fight with you, pick your pocket, or even break into your home, does that really m they deserve to be shot?

    Nightfox

The problem is, if somebody breaks into your home, how do you know they just want to steal some of your stuff? Maybe they want to rape your wife or daughter? What then? Just give them a good scare and hope that makes them
stop? You are right, shooting somebody IS excessive unless you're in fear of serious harm to yourself, or another human being. While having a CCW doesn't turn me into a LEO, if I see a guy raping a chick, or beating her bloody, am
I supposed to just call 911 and sit back and watch the show? I don't think
so. But then everyone has to decide for themselves how much and what kind of involvment in society they want for themselves.

I will agree, anyone that just gets a license and thinks that makes the 'qualified' to carry a gun probably should NOT carry one! In fact my mother also has a license, but won't carry until she learns how to properly shoot. If you carry a gun, and either don't know how to use it or don't know how to use it well enough that it's use is almost second nature to you, having it can turn into a bad thing for you! I'm an NRA certified instructor, but I'm not about to teach my own mother! I haven been carrying for a while as I've been sick, so haven't been able to ge out to the range to keep in practice, and practice is everything! Well, knowing what to practice helps too :)

Why it's soo important to have gun ?
does it's soo dangerous or city does nothing to catch bad guy
Guns is not to make Garden , its to kill !
Why "label" Bad guys , are so agresive , They want to survive !
    Why this violence Each others

    ... Fisher-Price Play. Laugh. Grow

A Gun: It's better to have one & not need one than to need one & not have
    one.

What just happened in OR is a perfect example. If any of those students or maybe even the teacher had a gun maybe less lives would have been lost. Ever wonder why these mass shootings are all done in 'gun free' zones?

also it has a lot to do with personality type. there's people that freeze up and there's people that ride out the stress and perform through it.

if someone that freezes up confronts another with a gun, that criminal just might end up getting a better gun or an extra one atleast.

This is true. Unfortunately I've had occasion to find out how I react in
those kind of stress situations, and luckily for me I'm able to function thru the stress. Once the stress is over I fall apart, but during the stress I'm fine.

    Can i come to your
house and rape your wife infront of you and take all your money and kick you dog? if you are saying i just want to survive by doing that, then you have something wrong with you.

Lets see, come over and rape the wife? Sure, why not.
Take all my money? Sure, I don't have all that much, and I can get more.
Kick my dog??? Ok, that's it the gun's coming out... that click you hear is
me releasing the safety... have you gone yet? :)

Ever wonder why these mass shootings are all done in 'gun free' zones?

Only 14% of mass shootings took place in gun=free zones between Janurary 2009 and July 2014.

Of those that did, there's no evidence that the locations were chosen because it was gun-free.

There have been home invaders getting shot and killed quite a bit in my city. The only reason I don't own a gun is because of the money that guns cost. I'd shoot to kill an invader any day.

Let me show some gun humor too:

Have any of you heard about a homeless camper in Albuquerque who got shot by police? It was all over the news, and still is locally here. The video is available on the internet, check out "James Boyd Albuqueruqe."

The video makes it look like poor little James was defenseless, and the cops killed him without much of a reason. And maybe they did... but.....

Anyway, protesters loaded the streets downtown (the street - lomas blvd) and they shouted at the police, condemning the killing. Know what? What a bunch
    of dummies....

So like 2 years later, we come to find out that poor defenseless James Boyd
was a serial child rapist. <- Now how do they feel about what they were protesting about?

The 2 cops are facing prison sentences, but I support them 100% and think
they should be rewarded for what they did, whether it be the key to the city, or free food from Twisters. If I ever see them, I WILL treat them with
    respect.

as much these days. Janis Joplin is a perfect example, if you look at
some of her earliest records the 1 or 2 songs that were top 40 hits were

Good point, and all the other tracks sucked really bad too, in general.
It's sad to say, but she actually got way more attention than she
    deserved.

I never liked her. I still don't. I have no idea what the fuss was all about.
