I like Minecraft. I tend to have creative spurts where I feel like playing Minecraft and building something or doing some exploring, but other times I

Haha! I get that kind of answer all the time. It was my son that got me into it. He was living with his mother at the time and asked me to get the game for him as a gift so I did some "research" on youtube and the net in general to see what it was all about before buying the game for him. I ended up watching some Minecraft youtubers (adults) playing on a server called Mindcrack and it looked like they were having a lot of fun. I also learned that the game had more to it than what I first thought. It also had a social aspect that looked appealing.

I decided to go ahead and buy an account for him and myself so I could try it first hand. (bypassing the free demo)

Backgroud: My son was living out of state with his mother and step father. She never really allowed us to have much of a relationship and montiored all calls / communication. She used lies and manipulation to lead him to believe I wanted nothing to do with him most of his life. He was 14 when I sent the giftcard for the game.

He was excited to receive the game and called me while she was at the store to thank me. When he found out that I bought an account too he was overjoyed and convinced me to play with him on some public server. That wasn't much fun for me because of all the crazy people on there, stealing, trolling, griefing, etc, but I had fun talking with him during that short time.

The next day I discovered that I could download a minecraft server .jar for free so I started a month long quest of setting up my own custom/modded server. After that I had him and some of his friends join and we all played and skyped together for some time, maybe three months, before his mother learned what was going on and grounded him from the game and from me...

This started a chain reaction because he knew at that point that I did want to spend time with him and we had gotten to know each other a bit better. He was standing up to her. He knew I loved him and wasn't going to let her tell him otherwise. A very long story short, I got custody of him just before his 16th bday. (wow this has gotten long)

Now we play Minecraft whever we want on our Realms account. I had to shut the server down because the modded version lost support (another long story) and Realms just works so there it is...

A lot of people, especially parents/adults/fps gammers, look at Minecraft and see really bad graphics and never try it. You can upgrade the graphics by way of installing a new resource pack and get anywhere from 32-bit up to 512-bit with shaders if you like.

My favorite part of the game is survial multi-player. You can play in creative and just build stuff, but it gets boring too fast for me. I have since added a handfull of adult friends to my Realms server and my Son's friends hardly play anymore, so it's just us older people building a medieval city.

I myself haven't played in about a month however, due to the continuation of my BBS! I may have to find some time to check on my farms soon...

I was just replying to Mindless Automation before I got to your reply. You should check out my reply to him.

Up until I started working on my BBS again I was playing on my Realms server and my Bukket server before that almost every single day and night. Every spare moment of free time was spent in game lol.. (admiting this is my first step)

I love the game, but most of my friends and family don't seem to have time to play these days and I've been putting all my spare time in to the BBS, but I'll get back to my farms soon.

Mro, THAT is exactly why I built my own server for my kids to play on with me as a moderator. I didn't want them playing on a public server or someone else's private server... I also wouldn't let them have friends on the server if they had never met that friend in person. My boys had a few friends from public servers.. I did what I could for them even though they were in their mother's custody at the time.

Other than that, Minecraft is great!

He knew I loved him and wasn't going to let her tell him otherwise. A very long story short, I got custody of him just before his 16th bday. (wow this has gotten long)

I'm amazed at the kinds of manipulative things people do involving other people.
I bet you're glad you were able to get custody of him, and it's good that you'll
be able to get to know each other more.

Now we play Minecraft whever we want on our Realms account. I had to shut the server down because the modded version lost support (another long story) and Realms just works so there it is...

Regarding the modded server, are you referring to Bukkit? I was using Bukkit for a long time and had heard that they were going to stop developing Bukkit. But it seems that Bukkit has been picked up again, and I also found out about another Minecraft server that supports the same mods as Bukkit, called Spigot - and Spigot uses fewer resources:
    https://www.spigotmc.org

A lot of people, especially parents/adults/fps gammers, look at Minecraft and see really bad graphics and never try it. You can upgrade the graphics by way of installing a new resource pack and get anywhere from 32-bit up to 512-bit with shaders if you like.

I've heard that from some people, but I don't think graphics alone is what makes
a game fun. Minecraft might not have the most cutting-edge realistic graphics, but that's part of the point and charm of Minecraft - It's meant to look that way. I think the main fun of Minecraft is the building (and, well, crafting) - gathering materials and using them to make something different. I also like exploring the randomly-crated worlds. I actually like how it looks, as a sort of artistic take on real-world objects.

My favorite part of the game is survial multi-player. You can play in creative and just build stuff, but it gets boring too fast for me. I have since added a handfull of adult friends to my Realms server and my Son's friends hardly play anymore, so it's just us older people building a medieval city.

I enjoy survival mode too, for basically the same reason - It seems that creative mode could get boring. I like the challenge of gathering resources and
using them to build things. However, some materials are just too rare to build some of the things I want to build, so I cheat sometimes - As a Minecraft op, I sometimes use op commands to give myself some things, or switch into creative mode occasionally.

I myself haven't played in about a month however, due to the continuation of my BBS! I may have to find some time to check on my farms soon...

I enjoy building farms too - Rather, mechanisms that help harvest things. I like building things that are a bit silly and unconventional too - One of the things I've built is a hollow pyramid (about 71 blocks wide at the base) with some farms inside it, along with a rail track that goes around the inside of the
pyramid about halfway up. I also have some underground animal pens. I sometimes try to think of other silly stuff to put in the pyramid or elsewhere.

Yes we have. It's been amazing since he got here and he's told me his life is so much better now.

Yes, I think I mentioned Bukkit and I misspelled it. lol I stopped when dev shut down over all the BS around the code takedown. Anyway, I didn't know they started up again, but I'm happy with Realms for now. It runs better than my home server ever could (F'COX) and although they don't have an open API yet, I still like it. I didn't add tons of plugins to my home server, just what was needed to control the kids. Now that the kids don't play and it's just adults, we have all the self control that's needed to follow the basic "golden" rule. I've heard of Spigot and been to their website a few times, but never installed it. I also heard that Bukkit forked off (sortof) into something called Sponge, but I haven't tried that either. https://www.spongepowered.org/

I'd love to see that pyramid of yours. It sounds really cool. The only animals I've put undergound so far are chickens. lol I recently built an egg farm underground with a minecart collection system that feeds the eggs into an auto cooker that sorts the cooked chicken into a storage arrray. After I had a couple double chests of feathers I conected that side of the sorter to an auto disposal. At first the damn feathers clogged up the system and that was a lot of fun debuging the whole thing. After fine tuning it all I had, at one point, something like 900 chickens in the egg farm pushing out tons of cooked chicken and a constant stream of lag in that part of my base.. LOL After about 6 dbl chests full of cooked chicken I installed on off switch and shut down. I also thined out the egg farm a lot.

I'm not a master at redstone yet, but I'm learning by doing. lol I like to watch and follow tutorials from youtubers such as Mumbo, Docm77 and Xisumavoid for cool redstone things and I usually mod them for my needs. While I'm on the subject, I also like watching Etho's vanilla/smp Let's Play videos. I've learned a lot from him. There were a few others from the servers he plays on that I followed for a while, but so much these days. For medieval building style, I really like tuts from Jamziboy, Jeracraft and Madnes64. I like to build their stuff in a survival world because their builds look so much better than mine and it's challenging.

Do you play on a server or just single player?
