First TechDorks podcast episode from myself and Stephen Hurd (Deuce). I think we're going to try for a weekly one hour show schedule, but we'll see. Let us know what you think. We hope you get some kind of enjoyment from it.

Really good to see you two guys doing something like this. Long overdue! Tarballs, Rasberry pie,,,

Way over my head but made me laugh!

Would love to hear a Synchronet tip of the
week in every episode or something similiar to that.

    Keep it up guys!

I tell ya, I havn't touched the BBS in years and now I'm kicking myself for ev er shutting it down. Shameful how many things I've forgotten how to do. Dropped to DOS last night and thought i could just type LIST to display the dir, Things are never where i remember putting them. Not a good sign! ;)

Just longing to get back to a good/basic working BBS. Had a phone line put in for good measure. ;)

Speaking of LIST, sad to learn that Vernon Buerg passed away some years back.

    Best Everyone!

    http://mp3.techdorks.net/episodes/techdorks-2015-07-14-ep1.mp3

I listened to it last night and enjoyed it. As a software engineer myself, I thought the topic of software developer/engineer interviews was interesting. It definitely seems that there are a lot of software job applicants out there who know mostly the basics or don't seem to have a great grasp on it. On the flip side, it's very easy to be nervous during an interview, as the person being interviewed is put on the spot and has to think on their feet to come up with answers to the questions. I've found that with software projects, it's often not feasable to come up with a solution that quickly. Also, creating good software is often an iterative process where the product is improved over time, even before a 1.0 release. The fact that many companies are adopting scrum & Agile practices seems to confirm that. Sometimes you might be able to think of a good solution (or a few good solutions) up-front, but sometimes it also pays to do some research and see what other ideas & solutions might be out there for the same problem. Also, even if a job candidate might not know as much as you'd like them to about a certain programming language, I think the ability to look up information & apply information to learn technologies is important.

I could probably go on more about this subject, but I want to avoid writing a wall of text that results in "too long, didn't read". :)

It seems like their podcast is aimed at a more general audience. Many of the people who would listen to it might not be into BBSing - but I think it could be interesting to hear a tidbit about it once in a while.

i'm never nervous during job interviews. you really have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so just have a good time if it's possible. i have had people interview me who didnt know what they were doing. i'd have to carry them in the interview or they would just ask odd questions.

i'm not a software engineer, (i'm a whole lot of things at my job), i basically work in manufacturing but i make good money. that being said, i'm lucky to be working in today's day and age.

That's true. Generally I try to do that. I feel like there's still always the feeling of being on the spot, but overall I agree, and it's good to just try to be prepared and try to have a good time with it.

basically work in manufacturing but i make good money. that being said, i'm lucky to be working in today's day and age.

That's true too. I'm constantly thankful that I'm still gainfully employed with the economy & things the way they are these days.

that probably falls into what i was saying about bad interviewers.

people who interview job applicants well don't make the other person feel uncomfortable or try to trick them or trip them up. they're just supposed to interview in the best way possible and see if you are the right candidate for the job. it should just be an exchange of information.

i think bad interviewers often end up hiring bullshit artists who werent really suited for the job skill or personality wise.

    Greetings, you podcast-loving BBS people,

Here's an officially unofficial mirror of the TechDorks podcast:

    http://bbs.electronicchicken.com/?page=004_techdorks.xjs

If you find that episodes download slowly from the official site, you might get better speeds here. Or not. I don't know.

New episodes will be added automatically, so I won't have to mess around with updating anything manually.

(Existing episodes are currently being downloaded. They will start to show up on that page over the next few hours or so.)
