• Best Films of 2014?

    From Telerophon@VERT/PHARCYDE to Dovenet.Entertainment on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 15:57:01
Hey all you DOVEnet Dialers out there~

I was wondering to myself what all you thought were the best movies of
2014. I don't get to the theater near enough myself; trying to think of
some I would consider "best" off of the top of my head is leaving me
    without much of a conclusion.

One I have to nominate is "Big Hero 6". Yeah, it's a disney movie, but I
was pretty happy with how it subverted a lot of cultural expectations
about what exactly a superhero or a superhero team is. Also maybe I
watched too much Takashi Miike and I'm bored with violence.

I've heard that "Nightcrawler" is quite good, but I haven't gotten a
    chance to see it.

Anyway, what were your favorite films of 2014 and why?
    Nerds want to know!

Of course, I also forgot to mention "The Grand Hotel Budapest", which
was excellent. I have a lot of bizarrely mixed feelings about Wes
Anderson's films, but his style is really evolving in scope and becoming "grander", if you will. I didn't like "The Darjeeling Limited" that
much, and felt that 'Budapest' really marked the maturation of the new, large-scale coming-of-age epic that he has been exploring in his later
films. Very solid, balanced, and well-placed, with fewer flourishes that distracted from the story like in 'Darjeeling'.

It definitely earned its Oscar nomination!

Valid point, although the Oscars are basically a popularity contest at
this point. I'd be interested in seeing how our opinions differ from the "experts". :P

If we're agreeing to the presupposition that the Oscars are essentially
a popularity contest decided upon for political reasons as opposed to
overt cinematic quality of the films nominated, it's pretty simple to
conclude that "Avatar", a Sci-Fi Fantasy Film that's critical of the
military industrial complex, would lose to "The Hurt Locker", a film
which glorifies soldiers and, intentionally or not, warfare.

uh, think you are looking into this way too far.

avatar was just eye candy. that's okay cause apparently that's what people want.

also, hollywood and the people attached to the oscars are mostly liberal jew who are normally against war.

But wasn't the director of The Hurt Locker the wife of somoene in power of who got awards? That is just what I heard. I have never looked into it..

Birdman, hands down was my favourite. So nice to see something different break through and scoop up a bunch of awards and recognition. Some great film making in action, there.

Honourable mentions for the LEGO Movie and Captain America, too!

My best of 2014 in no particular order:

What We Do in the Shadows (Hilarious vampire comedy)
    It Follows
    The Guest
    Phoenix
    Citizenfour
    Foxcatcher
    Inherent Vice
    Birdman
    Comet
The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz
    Before I Dissapear
Wild Tales (Hilarious Argentinian movie about Revenge)
    Mommy
    John Wick
    Nightcrawler
    Whiplash
Interstellar (I know, not everyone like this one. I did not care for
    the love crap)
    Gone Girl
    Guardians of the Galaxy
    Boyhood
The Raid 2 Redemption (One of the best if not the best action movie ever made) 22 Jump Street
    Edge of Tomorrow
    X-Men: Days of Future Past
Who Don't You Play in Hell? (must see if you like your movies crazy and
    oozing with atmosphere)
    Killers
Captain America: Winter Soldier (easily the best Marvel movie out there)
    The Grand Budapest Hotel
    Lego Movie
    New World

It's tough to choose, but my personal favourite would have to be Nightcrawler.
