Reading the last of this thread about the evolution of gaming systems reminded me of the old arcade. I haven't been to a mall in a while, but
I'm guessing they no longer have the dedicated arcade like they had back in the day. Does anyone have a standalone arcade near where they live? I wonder if they even continue to develop standalone machines.
in my city they still have an arcade.

I believe there's just a few left in large cities. When I was near
Dallas, they had one...I forget the name for the moment... it was a
large business in the mall, two stories. If I recall correctly, the
lower floor was for the kiddos, with appropriate entertainment
including arcade games. When you went upstairs, immediately
accessable was a bar & grill where you could take the family, and they
also served alcoholic beverages. The more violent arcade games, and oldschool games, were located up here. It was pretty cool to order a
mixed drink and play early eighties games on original hardware. ;)
I believe it's a franchise. I just can't remember the name... argh.

Milwaukee had Aladdin's Castle and we used to hit the local bowling
alley, Olympic Lanes, which had a good selection of games.
Other than that, locally I can only think of one arcade. It has only
a handful of machines, half of which are broken at any given time, and
for sale -- cheap. Half of the other half also have price stickers on them. It's a very depressing place, and the busiest I ever seen it
was with five other people there. I honestly don't know how it's
still in business.
My son lives with his mom during the week in Santa Cruz. The Boardwalk out there has several arcades, one of which has a working Galaga, Defender, Tempest, PacMan and Space Invaders. And a couple others I don't recall.
