There's a new Canadian scifi show called Continuum that recently premiered. It's pretty awesome... The imdb entry says "A detective from the year 2077 finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver and searching for ruthless criminals from the future." That pretty much sums up the series, but of course there's SO much more to it. Kinda like "X-Files is about aliens and the supernatural" just doesn't do that show justice, either.

    Anyone else seen it yet?

I've been watching it... there's a few flaws I'm unhappy with - plot holes and a tendency to blur portions of the shot. So far I'm still hanging in, but I've
yet to be happy about a complete show.

The posters in the subway were enough to convince me not to watch the latter. Never heard of the former.

I'm generally unimpressed with the quality of Canadian comedy and drama programming, however I suppose I'd give stuff from Showcase more of a chance than junk from the other networks. There are often Canadian *co-productions* that work out a bit better (cooperating with American networks or the BBC,) but most of the home-grown stuff just makes me want to puke.

Eh, I learned a long time ago to look past the small stuff. Kinda have to if you're a big Trekkie... ;)

I can look past the small stuff like them cleaning guns from the muzzle to the breech, but the big stuff like them all having proficiency with 70 year old weapons and Kellog remembering enough specific business details from 70 years ago to get Richie Rich Rich in a matter of a week or two is hard to swallow. I
can do a couple in each eposide, but when they come in flocks, it keeps me jarred out of my suspension of disbelief.

The blurring of the top and/or bottom of the screen in many of the shots almost
drove me up the wall in the last episode... along with the whole lack of a resolution to the paradox and a reason that the terrorists might know the name of the cops grandma.

I can look past the small stuff like them cleaning guns from the muzzle to the breech, but the big stuff like them all having proficiency with 70
year old weapons and Kellog remembering enough specific business details from 70 years ago to get Richie Rich Rich in a matter of a week or two is hard to swallow. I can do a couple in each eposide, but when they come in flocks, it keeps me jarred out of my suspension of disbelief.

There's a lot we don't know about their future. Probably basic mechanical physics is taught in middle school, and they certainly strike me as mechanically inclined. Could be they trained on all types of weapons: mechanical/chemical as well as electronic/particle.

Certainly Kellog, being extremely intellectual and well studied, would be well versed in the history of "what the hell happened to our world". He probably would have extensive knowledge on all the early key players, whether he had known he'd need it or not. I'm sure some of the minor details lost to history would be able to be filled by present day info.

Lastly, they never said whether or not he's got any augmentation. If he's chipped, and since he's fairly smart, he would have downloaded info well into the 1900's.

The blurring of the top and/or bottom of the screen in many of the shots almost drove me up the wall in the last episode... along with the whole
lack of a resolution to the paradox and a reason that the terrorists might know the name of the cops grandma.

There's some backplot that the writers are still dangling, such as how and why she was maneuvered into this situation. I get the feeling that Kellogg was fed information about her from whoever helped set up their "breakout".

stargate was a pretty good show. sliders was good for a short while before fox execs stepped in and started mucking about.

Yeah, there's not many Fox shows I could really get into. They're either really great, or really bad.

Back in the mid nineties, BBC and Fox produced a Doctor Who movie. It was OK; at least, they didn't fuck with any of the major stats of the show (two hearts, multiple lives/regenerations, sonic screwdriver, quirky mind, and so on). Even started off with the previous doctor "dying" and regenerating.

However, the plot was not that great. They really stretched the believability of the Master's survival. Supposedly, the Time Lords and, if memory serves, the Daleks teamed up against the Master. They hold a quick trial, and destroy the Master.

If the Daleks were involved, it's a pretty good bet he was reduced to less-than-ashes. However, the Doctor is charged with transporting his "remains" to Gallifrey, and for some reason they're stored in little more than a sealed box. Of course, there's an accident with the TARDIS, and the Master breaks free, his essence oozing out and taking over someone's body.

Now, there's a story I can have some concerns with! :) It'd been far more believable if some cohort had taken the box and somehow regenerated the Master from whatever remains were left. Come to think of it, that's almost exactly what the 2005 TV series ran with, and it sure was far more believable. Well, as believable as any pseudo-sci-fi can get.

Basic mechanical physics won't give you proficiency - I'm talking about getting
an arbitrary firearm from 70 years ago with the safety on and shooting it accurately under a second later.

It's expected that the special forces guys would be familiar with a wide range of weapons, but familiarity and proficiency are different things. There is no similar excuse for the cop (who came late to the profession).

Not enough to amass a fortune in a matter of a week or two trading in the stock
market. You would need to know specific dates of stock ups and downs - something you simply don't study in any course.

Lastly, they never said whether or not he's got any augmentation. If he's chipped, and since he's fairly smart, he would have downloaded info well into the 1900's.

Why would he have done that? Even with theoretically infinite storage, I still
wouldn't download the price history of all stocks going back sixty years... and
I can't think of why Kellog would either.

The blurring of the top and/or bottom of the screen in many of the shots almost drove me up the wall in the last episode... along with the whole lack of a resolution to the paradox and a reason that the terrorists might know the name of the cops grandma.

Except Kellog isn't the one who knew who her grandparents were and she was swapped in to the security detail at the last moment.

All that said though, the last eposide did not bother me in any significant way
    (yay).

There's a new Canadian scifi show called Continuum that recently
    premiered.
It's pretty awesome... The imdb entry says "A detective from the year
    2077
finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver and searching for ruthless criminals from the future." That pretty much sums up the series, but of course
there's SO much more to it. Kinda like "X-Files is about aliens and the supernatural" just doesn't do that show justice, either.

    Anyone else seen it yet?

Yes, we have been watching that show. Very cool new show.

The only way to watch this show in the US, is to download it. It isn't available on any US network that I'm aware of.

Well you learn something new every day don't ya? Ren N Stimpy bein a Canadian show, while we're on the subject, about 1996/1997 there was a Canadian children's show on in Australia called Stickin' Around. My favourite episode of that was Disciplinary Action. Anyway, I also remember a NZ series called 'Freaky.' Anyone remember that? Some of the ones I remember: 'Fridge', 'Principal', 'Photobooth', etc... Don't know what other childrens shows were around - but they were REAL quality compared to the absolute peanut-brained shows that pass for entertainment these days...
