...beautiful, my beautiful... Chinese Spy Balloon!!!

So this morning I am watching the local news (NBC affiliate), and they
mention that a UFO was sighted over Montana and US officials had determined
it was a spy balloon, likely from China. Apparently it wafted across the US-Canadian border sometime mid-week.

They also said that the decision on what to do about it went all the way up
to President Biden, who said we couldn't shoot it down because it might "fall and hurt someone."

Now, Montana is a very large and very sparsely populated state. Some of
the states it would have had to have crossed through to get to its current position (apparently over Kansas City, MO) are also very sparsely
populated. Plenty of opportunity to shoot it down and have it likely not
fall on anything, except a corn field or a former government missle silo
    site.

Now that they've waited until it is over more populated areas, they are going to let it continue its flight across the country, until it reaches the Gulf
or the Atlantic or falls down on its own rather than shoot it down.

So, if you live in its path, you might want to go outside and give the
Chinese government something to look at. :(

Our government seems as clueless, and vulnerable, as they did right
    before 9/11.

Yes, maybe that was the angle. I thought it was more about how to get a non-government aircraft/device up to the balloon, which was at 60,000+
feet of altitude. There aren't many (any?) planes that can fly that
high, and the original "idea" was to use a "drone"... ;-)

It's route was over a bunch of sites they could easily keep track of with satellite. A ballon would take weeks to get here over the North Pole and Canada so if they wanted to catch or observe something special, they would
have to have ample time to know what and where to look for. It was left up there to draw attention to the antics of the Chinese government. Any signals that came from it could've been captured and decrypted by the CIA.

The satellites already exist. The idea behind drones and recon aircraft is
to view events in real time. That is what is screwy behind using a balloon.
It takes days if not weeks to float a ballon over the North Pole , and it's path is victim to the weather patterns. You would have to know of an event well before floating a ballon with intent to capture something you couldn't observe using satellite.

The ballon flew at 66,000 feet. Off the shelf GPS modules do not operate at speeds over 1000 knots and altitudes over 60,000 feet. You need a fighter

If a civillian wanted build a missile to shoot something like that down, it would have to travel at speeds less than 1000 knots and be guided in some
other way than GPS over 60,000 feet. 20 years ago a cruise missile could be made ofr $15,000. I imagine one could made for under $10k

It's route was over a bunch of sites they could easily keep track of with satellite. A ballon would take weeks to get here over the North Pole and Canada so if they wanted to catch or observe something special, they would have to have ample time to know what and where to look for. It was left up there to draw attention to the antics of the Chinese government. Any signals that came from it could've been captured and decrypted by the CIA.

This very large balloon, manuverable with sensors. Perhaps
the sensors on the airship were more advanced than satellite tech.

It was also at 66,000 feet. Non-military GPS limits altitude to 60,000 feet a nd speds under 1000 knots. Whatever you want to hit it with would have operate outside the bounds of commercial grade equipment

that's what we were told one time. this is not a normal balloon and it's possible for them to change the altitude apparently. they just can't go against the wind.

if they wanted high-res imagery they could control the balloon and forced it to decend and then raise up. In this case, they would have better data than sattelite.

It would be pretty hilarious if the government says they cannot brin it down safely and then some Joe Schmo brings it down with some hobb equipment. :D

honestly i was expecting elon musk to do something.
    just for laughs.

If someone had the tech to go up that high, grab it, and bring it back, i would probably be him. Now that it has happened, it would not surprise m if he doesn't figure out how to do it.

There are people who think Trump is still the "secret president" and that
    he
S Military still takes orders from him.

There are? I have not heard that one. I did hear about the conspiracty
theory that Trump and one (and only one!) Supreme Court Justice were going
to pull some shennanigans and get him reinstated. That is not a right-wing theory, but a theory believed by those who are afraid it might happen.

So, was Trump directly in charge of the Afghanistan withdrawl?

    Nope.

If they didn't before, they do now thanks to Biden.

You mean, because of the middle-east troop draw-down that Trump
    signed before he left?

If you take over for someone, don't listen to those advising you and then half-ass the job, you can blame you predecessor but that doesn't make it
    their fault.
