Cardiac involvement and myocardial inflammation are common in recovered COVID-19 patients, according to a new study published in JAMA Cardiology.

The authors studied cardiac imaging results of 100 adult patients included in the University Hospital Frankfurt COVID-19 Registry. All patients had confirmed cases of COVID-19 but passed a swab test after at least two weeks in isolation. They were recruited for this analysis between April to June 2020.

The team tracked patients who had experienced a wide variety of outcomes after their diagnosis. Just two of the 100 patients had to undergo mechanical ventilation, for example, and oxygen supplementation was required in 28 patients.

All participants underwent cardiac MR imaging using standardized and unified protocols on 3T MRI scanners. The cohort was compared with 50 healthy control patients and 57 risk factor-matched patients.

Overall, the team found that 78 patients had abnormal imaging findings. Findings included raised myocardial native T1 (73 patients), raised myocardial native T2 (60 patients), myocardial late gadolinium enhancement (32 patients) and pericardial enhancement (22 patients). Three patients underwent a biopsy after severe abnormalities were detected.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I am curious as to what the results would be for a random sample of the population, though.

But no information was known BEFORE the COVID diagnosis.

So, while this is interesting and certainly worthy of more research, it doesn't say too much about COVID and cardiac issues since the issues may have existed BEFORE the COVID diagnosis.

The authors studied cardiac imaging results of 100 adult patients included in the University Hospital Frankfurt COVID-19 Registry. All patients had confirmed cases of COVID-19 but passed a swab test after at least two weeks in isolation. They were recruited for this analysis between April to June 2020.

"Cause of death was listed as pneumonia in 35 cases (89.7%), while the other four (10.2%) died of necrotizing fasciitis, cardiac decompensation with previous heart failure, bacterial bronchitis, or unknown causes. The most common underlying illnesses were coronary artery disease (32 [82.0%]), high blood pressure (17 [43.6%]), and diabetes (7 [17.9%]). Median patient age was 85 years, and 23 of 39 patients (59%) were women.

"Overt fulminant myocarditis has been reported in isolated patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection," the authors wrote. "However, the current data indicate that the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in cardiac tissue does not necessarily cause an inflammatory reaction consistent with clinical myocarditis."

They called for future research on the long-term complications of COVID-19 cardiac involvement.
    "

so they were all old, existing conditions and findings are inconclusive.

While true, 100% of the studies have found this so far.

Which studies have found these after efffects of COVID?

I think we may just need clarification on what you consider reliable news sources, as I've seen reports in news distributors considered aligned with nearly every political bent.

I think we may just need clarification on what you consider reliable
news sources, as I've seen reports in news distributors considered
aligned with nearly every political bent.

Ones, like CNN, WaPo, and the like that have demonstrated bias to the point where they willingly lie are not reliable news sources.

You are correct that pretty much every source is biased to some extent.
But when you know that they are biased you can adjust what they say to
account for the bias, then go after the base information that they talk
about to get a clearer picture.

So, when a talking head says 'expert say', but don't say what 'experts',
    that's unreliable news.

Also, when the "news" contridicts itself, that's unrelliable.
ex: a local "news" source screams doom and gloom over the COVID numbers,
then shows you the COVID numbers and you do your own calculation on them
and it shows no doom and gloom.
