Does anyone know where I can get a reasonable price on vaccume tubes? I have an ancient guitar amp which is killer but it eats tubes. It is kind of expensive to buy 6 6L6GC tubes all at once. At least $75.00.

Not really, you might try looking at some Chinese tubes. 6L6's are high-end tubes and they are always pricey. You might take a look at a local electronics warehouse and see if they have any old ones laying around. But, your amp probably won't sound like it should. You usually get what you pay for with tubes. Also, if you're replacing all 6 tubes I would try to get a matched set and you will also probably need to get the amp re-biased. What kind of amp is it?

Well it's not an ancient Marshall or Vox but It's one of the first Peavey hybrids that came out in the 70s. I bought it new in 1977. A Peavey Mace with dual channels. I have smoked so many speakers that I put two Carvin 200 watt 12s in it and have it sitting on top of a Marshall 4X12 cab that has also
been respeakered. I used to like to drive one channel through the other but
now I run it in parallel with a Zoom digital effects processor. I often
thought of Peaveys as junk but it's lasted me this long.

    Build your own. =)

Serious, you could build a vacume tube from electronic parts and make the amplifier work or you could procure the equipment necissary to blow glass and make your own.

I love old Peavey amps. I record them all the time for some great clean and 'fuzzy' tones. There's always a decent selection of pre-1980 peavey combos available around the studio and they work great. They also don't mind baking for 4-6 hours at a time while tracking.

Hey go to http://www.thetubestore.com They have comparisons and specs on
just about any tube available as well as New Old Stock. I think the Sovtek 6L6WXT tubes are reasonably priced with good specs. The problem is buying six of them. Perhaps three matched pairs would do. As far as re-biasing my amp, I'll have to ask my local mechanic :)

Well, I live in the land of the Peaveys and I take that as an allmost insult. :-)

If you want to get it serviced then Mississippi is the place to go.

You mean to say that there's _another_ Synchronet BBS in this techno-backwater of a state?

I think that I might just drop by...

    P. S.

I go by Smartyhall when not on my BBS. It now has a total of ONE user, but it sure makes a great offile mail reader and I can tinker...
