Hiss in recordings is the extreme upper and lower parts of the wave form, almost out of actual hearing range. The only way to get rid of the hiss is to chop the extreme top and bottom of the wave. The only problem with doing this, believe it or not, you will lose alot of the quality of the song. Another way to do it, is to lower the volume of the wave, not the sound card volume, but the actual volume of the audio file. This won't get rid of the hiss, but will reduce it enough so that it won't be so bothersome. You could also try reducing the peak levels of the audio file, but again, you will prolly lose quality.

Sound Forge does this pretty well if you have the Sonic Foundry DeNoiser plugin. It's alway a little hit and miss when removing tape-hiss, sometimes removing the hiss will just kill the mix as well. Unless of course you got access to a Cedar System :-)

Also, I'm sure CoolEdit or something else that supports DirectX could do it as well with the right plugins.

thanks to all of yall for your help what is a good site to get good directx

Most plugins are commercial software and cost anywhere from $25 to $1000 depending upon what they are capable of.

You can start at www.sonicfoundry.com for some of the plugins offered by the Sound Forge designers.
