I'm in the process of building my home project studio. The thing is that I
have a 8x10 space, I want to put in a vocal booth but the cost of buying a
4x4 booth from Vocalbooth and having it shipped is over $4000. Does anyone
know of a DIY alternative.

Complete audio ISO is a must.

100% isolation? You might just have to build it yourself. Have you look at http://www.auralex.com ? They have a great document/tutorial on building recording/rehearsal studios and sound rooms.

Wasn't DM building an entire home studio?

I started building last summer (in my garage), but after breaking my collar bone in November, I haven't resumed. Now we're considering my moving (again) about 20 minutes east of here where we can get a half acre or more and I can build a "real" studio, so I may not be resuming this project at all.

You can very easily build it yourself. Do some searching on Studio
Construction and Acoustics. Basically, you'll want to first float the floor, second float/detach the finish walls, and make sure to use proper techniques for glass installation.


Basically you want to build a box inside of a box that isn't physically touching the surrounding walls/structure in any way. Floating the floor is pretty easily accomplished. Several companies sell products made to float floors, basically they are rubber gromets that hold the floor framing off the sub-floor. I've also seen hockey pucks used to save money. Floating the walls is a little more tricky, but again there are products and information out there on how to do it.

Just do some research and you'll find building an ISO booth is actually pretty easy. Now, getting one that is acoustically perfect or colored a certain way might require some input from a designer, but making one that is isolated properly and decent sounds is feasible for the DIY'er.

Well, the homes are already built, but pretty new (between 2001 and 2005), which is at least 10 years newer than our current home. The homes are bigger (between 300 and 1500 sqft bigger) and the lots are at least 3 times this size, so I would have the option of building my own studio (adjacent to the house), where as I don't have that option here. Even if we had a lot big enough, the home owners association wouldn't allow it (hence the studio-in-the-garage project).

Anyway, it's not a fer-sure thing yet, but we're looking and contemplating. I'd be about 15-20 minutes further from work, but we'd be closer to Elizabeth's family and both of my parents. <shrug>
