Well... I'll be hitting pawn shops for a while, trying to find a decent
Les Paul. I have about $700-800 to spend. Wish me luck!

Actually, I called every pawn shop in Fort Worth, and I found only 1
gibson. It was a "Custom" and they wanted $3500 for it.

I ended up going to Guitar Center, and buying... an EPIPHONE! lol

I'm really quite pleased with it. It plays better than my uncle's Gibson Custom Deluxe, and it's definately much more cost effective.

I had to spend the extra $100 and get the sunburst finish though!

I'll try and get a picture online sometime soon.

This is the first "brand new" electric guitar I've ever bought, and only
the second "brand new" guitar I've bought, period. Recently, I think I
posted about it, I bought a Dean Acoustic Bass "brand new."

The Bass was only $170, this Epiphone was $600. ouch.

All the guitars I've owned previously were bought from friends.

There is "Nothing" like the old Gibson for the sound or the
mechanical/playing side. I'm sorry... I've had the occassion to play
with these new "things" they call Gibson's... and well, they leave alot
to be desired. When you think of the time, dedication/love that was put
into creating "One" hand carved/worked guitar back in the day to the
machined to within an inch of their lives thousand created in a day
that not a human hand touched until they picked up the box crap that is
put out today... Its sad. But, thats another reason that the old
guitars increase in value so fast. Not just because of their age... but
the workmanship that was behind it was real human hands many hours of
    work... :)

I could care less about the "American vs. Foreign" thing... If the thing
was hand crafted in Libia, it would have more soul than the american
made in an automated factory thing does.

I can't sing, but I can play and sing. It comes so natural now, but it was very tough at the time. I'll take vocal lessons one of these days since I'm the one who sings pretty much all the songs in my band :). Might be a good idea.

Why don't you go out and at least get a 100 dollar 4 track? Or some recording software for the 'puter? Recording is fun and then you get to see how really terrible you are (or at least in my case, from what you've posted I bet you can shred the guitar).

I got a few cheap mics from Musician's Friend a while back... They were some cheap Nady's that were on sale. I think after allw as said and done, the mic+cable+stand was about $29 each. I've mic'ed a guitar cab with one of them before, with fairly decent results. I have a case full of mics, and one day I'm going to get around to trying them all out to see which sound best on guitar.

Looks like a good deal to me, but I figured I'd ask you guys. Sniper what d you think?

I ALMOST bought that guitar from them, but it was about $200 more than I wanted to spend. I have not played one, so I can't really rate it.

I ended up buying an Epiphone Les Paul Standard, and I am quite pleased
with it. It's hard to tell the difference between it and my uncle's Les
Paul Deluxe, other than the wear on the finish. The frets are filed on my uncles deluxe, but I really can't tell it makes much difference in playability. I guess the biggest difference is the name on the headstock.

I used to love playing the Les Paul's! The standards are beautiful with a great sound! That's all I played for a number of years, until about 5 years ago I had a guitar custom built for me by Jacobson Guitars (A 1 man outfit in hastings ontario) and I sold everthing else. The amazing thing is the price tag was only $1800!

What I think.... Nice guitar... :)

My Gibson's Les Paul's (4) have cost a hell of a lot more than that. :(

    you'd better buy it before I do! :) I don't have a faded cherry

Thanks. I'll go to the local shoppe here and try out the Epiphone. I always equated the name Epiphone with lower end because they have cheapy versions of it.

It's a little more than I want to spend as well.

Epiphone is made by Gibson, the difference is the components are made overseas, and shipped to the states to be assembled, and tested. I've
also been told that the knobs and switches are of lesser quality, and are likely to wear out quicker. I figure they're easily replacable, so I
don't worry about it much. The finish may not have as many coats as the Gibson counterpart, but that doesn't affect playability either.

I figure, if they're good enough for The Beatles... :)

Out of curiosity, how do YOU pronounce "Epiphone"? My brother and I have a bit of a lively debate going on about it. He pronounces it "eh - pee - phone", while I pronounce it like epiphany, which I've always been pretty sure was the point.

I just prefer the Gibson... I prefer the hand crafted over the machine
    cut guitars.

I still can't believe how happy I am with a simple, fairly cheap Samick. Maybe it's the setup they gave it at the shop, but I swear it's a close call whether it matches and even surpasses the sound of my (quite relatively expensive) Washburn.

Wow, someone went back a bit to pull this one out of the dust...

I'd have to say I pronounce it the same as your brother... At least that's
how I've pronounced it for the last 25+ years. :)

I just prefer the Gibson... I prefer the hand crafted over the machine
    cut guitars.

I still can't believe how happy I am with a simple, fairly cheap

I have played most of the different Gibson's out there, whereas I think
I've messed with 2 Washburn's... They just never impressed me. A
Samick?? I'll have to take a look around for that one. :)

I recently went into a music store... I guess this shop sold primarily
Fenders, as they had no Gibson's at all. There were a few Peveys, and an assorted bunch of offbrand stuff. I asked them why they didn't carry the Gibson line. They had the audacity to tell me that Fenders were
better... Then proceeded to list off all these guitar players that used Fender. I think I recognized 3 out of their list... Eric Clapton was
one... So I started to list off my list of Gibson players... Anyway, I
ended up laughing my way out of that place.
