From Spaceman Spiff@VERT to All on Friday, August 20, 2004 20:11:00
Cool Edit Pro V2 by Syntrillium is an excellent piece of software IMHO.

Syntrillium sold out to Adobe who has turned Cool Edit Pro into their program called Adobe Audition and I believe the price has tripled, back in the day you could pick up Cool Edit Pro for $50-$120 depending on sales. I think Adobe Audition is running for $350.

I am wondering if they have added anything new to it? Or if they just took the same old program and repackaged it and jacked up the price to Adobe's concept ofwhat software should be priced.

If you already have Cool Edit Pro, is there any reason to go to Adobe Audition?

That's funny. Just recently, I couldn't get my (legit) copy of WaveLab v2 to install on my Win2K box, so when I couldn't locate my (illegitimate) copy of CoolEdit, I found exactly what you described on the web (!), and said to myself, "F-that!"

Anyway, I got a couple copies of WaveLabe v4 and v5 since then. Much better software anyway. <shrug>

Wavelab v4 v5....I haven't heard of it, but I will search for it.
I've been running Win 98 on this machine, ME on the wifes, I use 2000 Pro on my work Lap Top and I just put together a machine that is running XP. My 98 machine has the best sound card and is what I use for all my recording, but I plan on doing some experimenting with the other machines. The new XP Pro machine I built has a built in sound card on the mobo so I am not expecting a lot from it, besides my two kids have claimed that machine for their new gaming machine and of course the 14 year old now needs two computers. I guess I need to build another...my 9 year old will claim it if I do....

I was just thinking about that since you mentioned compatibility issues.

    Back on the subject....
The Wavlab, is it MIDI based or is it also good for analog to digital recording and what file types does it support.

Yeowzer.I just looked at their website.WAVELAB5 is$709 shipped.Daddy War Bucks! I guess if you are a professional musician knocking down some good buck per gig, Mick Jagger or Eric Clapton wouldn't think twice, like they would bother, but for the working stiff who has a day job, purchasing a legit copy of that is out of my reach. You know I wouldn't mind supporting the programer if the software was at least obtainable. $100 would be steep but reasonable if it was really a well written program. I wonder how much money they screw themselves out of.

I would prefer to buy a new Fender Twin Reverb amp or a new guitar and continue using my cool edit pro with mixing board run into the sound card.

I realize it is probably PRO software geared for a Professional recording studio. (sigh) I think there is a real market out there for a great recording suite that the average unemployed garage band/musician can afford.

I guess even a working band bringing in $800-$1000 a gig would buy it...guess I need to grab my Pig Nose and Fender Strat and throw a HAT down on South Street in Philly and become a street musician in my spare time. :)

It may sound harsh, but that's exactly what it is. People prefer to call themselves 'pirates' because they don't feel as bad and because pirates have a sort of Robin-Hood reputation and parrots are cute.

Shiver me timbers, is it really theivery or is it merely illigitimate duplication, simply making all my ones and zero's lining up just like the other guys. Well here in America, it depends on the meaning of the word "sex"...ar wait that was Bill Clinton and the word was sex...

Ar but I suppose you are right Angus, parots are mighty cute and so are beautiful women on the beach...but pirates prefer to call it unappreciated duplication for educational purposes only. Possibly we like the duplicated ones and zeros so much we want the original, of course only once it has gone on sale, and that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside when we know we have supported the creator of a fine work of ones and zeros just as to marry that beauty on the beach will arm the cokals of my loins knowin I would have such lovelyness for my own.

    Good question.

A friend of mine is rather taken with a local singer. (She's horrible to look at *and* to listen to, but I said he was a friend, not a *smart* friend.) He goes to see/listen to her every Thursday night. Sometimes he takes friends. One friend snapped the singers photo. The next day, they had a Tee-shirt made with the photo printed on the front. The following Thursday, my friend goes off to hear this singer, wearing the tee-shirt. When she sees the tee-shirt, she chucks an absolute wobbler, almost assaults my buddy, and insists that her image can not be used without her expressed written permission, and accuses him of trying to capitalize on her talent, steal her revenue, yada, yada, yada.

    This happened for real.

So are you actually free to photograph that beautiful woman? Or are you getting away with it only because she doesn't know or doesn't care, or knows and cares but can't think of any reasonable way to stop you?

Ar' an ya best be listenin' to him laddie fer he knows what he's a talkin' about. Parrots are mighty cute excepts when they poop on your shoulder. Shiver me timbers, is it really theivery or is it merely illigitimate duplication, simply making all my ones and zero's lining up just like the ot guys. Well here in America, it depends on the meaning of the word "sex"...ar wait that was Bill Clinton and the word was sex...

Well let me be makin' a little anology....if I am sitting under my palm tree drinkin' my rum while tapping out some Charlie Wiskey and a beautiful woman a string bikini waltzes down the beach and I snap pictures of here so I can look at her beauty later, did I steal her beauty...or did I mearly line up a my ones and zeros arcordingly....

Ar but I suppose you are right Angus, parots are mighty cute and so are beautiful women on the beach...but pirates prefer to call it unappreciated duplication for educational purposes only. Possibly we like the duplicated o and zeros so much we want the original, of course only once it has gone on sale, and that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside when we know we have supported the creator of a fine work of ones and zeros just as to marry that beauty on the beach will arm the cokals of my loins knowin I would have such lovelyness for my own.

    Good question.

A friend of mine is rather taken with a local singer. (She's horrible to lo at *and* to listen to, but I said he was a friend, not a *smart* friend.) H goes to see/listen to her every Thursday night. Sometimes he takes friends. One friend snapped the singers photo. The next day, they had a Tee-shirt ma with the photo printed on the front. The following Thursday, my friend goes off to hear this singer, wearing the tee-shirt. When she sees the tee-shirt she chucks an absolute wobbler, almost assaults my buddy, and insists that h image can not be used without her expressed written permission, and accuses of trying to capitalize on her talent, steal her revenue, yada, yada, yada.

    This happened for real.

So are you actually free to photograph that beautiful woman? Or are you getting away with it only because she doesn't know or doesn't care, or knows and cares but can't think of any reasonable way to stop you?

WOw, actually if she is is puplic place, the picture can be taken with no reprocussions, at least in my country and many others. Even famous people, if that were not the case we would not see all the poperazi photos of celebs in the myrids of magazines and news papers.

Now if he started selling the T-Shirts, I do not know, perhaps if he did own the photo taken in a puplic place. Hmmmm. Intersting question. If he took the phto from off of her CD case, then he would be in trouble becasue he did not own the photo. But I do not think there is a thing she can do about it.

If he snapped the phto while peeking through her bathroom window, big trouble, but photos taken in public locations, there is no law against it, and if there ever was then cameras would have to be outlawed for taking photos in any public place.

I'd like to think it were as simple as this, but if so, why do people who intend to use publicly-taken photos and film get people to sign a "release"?

I have done some internet searchs on PHotographers rights,

A lot of good stuff out there. As far as your friends T Shirt, he should be ok as long as he is not trying to sell them. If he made one for himself. I do think there is much the singer can do.

Did the club he took the photo in have a NO PHOTO's allowed policy? If not then there is a reasonable expectation to be allowed to take a picture. On private property if the owner of the property requests no pictures be taken then your friend is not allowed to take pictures. If this was not he policy at the time the photo was taken, your friend could even sell the picture to the SUN or the National Enquirer. If he tries to market merchandise like T-Shirts or Posters with the Singers picture, there could be legal issues, but if he made one for his own use, she can get ticked off, but I doubt there is anything she can do.

Shame, I am sure he was a fan and was not trying to alienate his idol.

Was this just a misunderstanding, was the incidident just handled poorly, or even after he tried to explain he was not selling these, did she still go nuts. Some people just do not act rationally. I dealt with the public for over 20 years and I ran into all types. Most people are pretty normal, but there are some Doozies out there. Sound like this singer is one. LOL.

I guess it is just another day in the life on "FANTASY ISLAND".

He didn't take it -- friends or relatives did, and knowing his affection for the woman, had the shirt made as a one-off gift for him. No commercialization intended or performed.

I doubt it. The Waterfront cafe

I was not present, but I did here his first-hand account the following Saturday afternoon (this would have happened the Thursday night, so just under 48 hours later). Apparently, he and his party were able to calm the woman down and the matter was concluded reasonably, but the thing is, she didn't begin reasonably. She chucked a wobbler, and virtually assaulted the man, yanking at the shirt and demanding he take it off, accusing him of trying to rob her and generally making a terribly embarassing scene for him.

Cool Edit Pro V2 by Syntrillium is an excellent piece of software IMHO.

Syntrillium sold out to Adobe who has turned Cool Edit Pro into their pro called Adobe Audition and I believe the price has tripled, back in the da could pick up Cool Edit Pro for $50-$120 depending on sales. I think Adob Audition is running for $350.

I am wondering if they have added anything new to it? Or if they just too same old program and repackaged it and jacked up the price to Adobe's con ofwhat software should be priced.

If you already have Cool Edit Pro, is there any reason to go to Adobe Aud

That's funny. Just recently, I couldn't get my (legit) copy of WaveLab v2 to install on my Win2K box, so when I couldn't locate my (illegitimate) copy of CoolEdit, I found exactly what you described on the web (!), and said to myself, "F-that!"

Anyway, I got a couple copies of WaveLabe v4 and v5 since then. Much better software anyway. <shrug>

audition is basically cool edit with more emphasis on video. i think they added support for vst/vsti processing, and some other crap that goes with it. imo, audition is good but it's just "cooledit" rebadged to look adobe. it's pretty pathetic imo for adobe to take such a low blow like that.

if you're looking for a basic simple affordable multitracker, n-track studio works well and has all the crap you'd want (of course the GUI isn't great but for $49 or $79 (24bit version) you get what you pay for). also there is an open source app for basic multitracking called audacity (check for it on sourceforge which is pretty good from the tests ive done with it so far).

if you already own cool edit, and don't do any video editing, skip the upgrade to audition.

Wavelab v4 v5....I haven't heard of it, but I will search for it.
I've been running Win 98 on this machine, ME on the wifes, I use 2000 Pro on work Lap Top and I just put together a machine that is running XP. My 98 machine has the best sound card and is what I use for all my recording, but plan on doing some experimenting with the other machines. The new XP Pro machine I built has a built in sound card on the mobo so I am not expecting lot from it, besides my two kids have claimed that machine for their new gam machine and of course the 14 year old now needs two computers. I guess I nee to build another...my 9 year old will claim it if I do....

I was just thinking about that since you mentioned compatibility issues.

    Back on the subject....
The Wavlab, is it MIDI based or is it also good for analog to digital record and what file types does it support.

spiff, sounds like you would be better off with a entry level digital studio package like n-track studio. i've investigated/used it enough to know that its perfect for new computer audiophiles like yourself.

www.fasoft.com is the homepage, and if you check the links button, there are links to tons of sites catering to 'newbies' for audio-multitracking and home-studio setups... one i can recommend wholeheartedly as i've actually read through it a bit is http://www.audiominds.com -- great tutorials for newbies.

Yeowzer.I just looked at their website.WAVELAB5 is$709 shipped.Daddy War Buc I guess if you are a professional musician knocking down some good buck per gig, Mick Jagger or Eric Clapton wouldn't think twice, like they would bothe but for the working stiff who has a day job, purchasing a legit copy of that out of my reach. You know I wouldn't mind supporting the programer if the software was at least obtainable. $100 would be steep but reasonable if it w really a well written program. I wonder how much money they screw themselves out of.

I would prefer to buy a new Fender Twin Reverb amp or a new guitar and conti using my cool edit pro with mixing board run into the sound card.

I realize it is probably PRO software geared for a Professional recording studio. (sigh) I think there is a real market out there for a great recordin suite that the average unemployed garage band/musician can afford.

I guess even a working band bringing in $800-$1000 a gig would buy it...gues need to grab my Pig Nose and Fender Strat and throw a HAT down on South Str in Philly and become a street musician in my spare time. :)

yeah. ntrack studio is $49 (for 16bit version which you will likely probably need) or $79 for 24bit version.

If he snapped the phto while peeking through her bathroom window, big troubl but photos taken in public locations, there is no law against it, and if the ever was then cameras would have to be outlawed for taking photos in any pub place.

LOL

He didn't take it -- friends or relatives did, and knowing his affection for the woman, had the shirt made as a one-off gift for him. No commercialization intended or performed.

Did the club he took the photo in have a NO PHOTO's allowed policy?

I doubt it. The Waterfront cafe

    http://www.waterfrontcafe.com.bb/aboutus.asp

is a typical tourist-trap, rip-off joint that serves crappy food served in the shell of a dry-coconut and charges a fortune because it's all oh, so "authentically native". If they tried to stop dumb-ass Yanquis ^W^W Honored Foreign Visitors taking snapshots of their paper-parasol/pinapple shish kebab- enhanced, suntan-oil ^W Malibu flavored, diced paw-paw punch, the result would probably be a riot!

Shame, I am sure he was a fan and was not trying to alienate his idol.

Absolutely. Why, I don't know, because she has a face like a bullfrog and B.O. to match, but hey -- for every old bread, there is a cheese!

Was this just a misunderstanding, was the incidident just handled poorly, or even after he tried to explain he was not selling these, did she still go nu Some people just do not act rationally.

From the way you describe this guy...sound like "Shallow Hal" if you ever saw the movie. Maybe he is under a hypnotic suggestion from Tony Robbins.

You have to say to him Shallow Hal Needs a gal to break the spell. Ah but he may not appreciate it. Especially if he saw the movie. LOL

yeah. ntrack studio is $49 (for 16bit version which you will likely probably need) or $79 for 24bit version.

it's simple easy and has tons of support for neophytes.

I just think that calling someone a 'thief' for doing so is a little hars even if it is a cute yet slightly odd-looking word.

It may sound harsh, but that's exactly what it is. People prefer to call themselves 'pirates' because they don't feel as bad and because pirates have sort of Robin-Hood reputation and parrots are cute.

Maybe it's her enormous, saggy breasts?

<shrug> I dunno. I've never met the woman -- only seen the photo on the shirt, and she looks pretty repulsive to me! I guess he must disagree. Or perhaps she has a really nice body odour...

actually aren't a group of parrots referred to as a gaggle?

I thought a gaggle was a collection of mouthwashes...

    hahaha

    no, monty :)

actually a gaggle is a group of geese too i think. i dont remember. i had this 'ice-breaker' exercise in one of my classes for college that basically listed all the odd and uncommon references to groups of animal classifiactions.

for instance a group of lions is called a pride (very cool imo)

    a pride of lions.

    that rules.

Ever watch "The Man Show" on "Spike TV".
They brought in a "JUGGY" and she could smash beer cans with her breasts.
The "enourmous saggy breats" image brought that picture to mind."

I'd like to think it were as simple as this, but if so, why do people who intend to use publicly-taken photos and film get people to sign a "release"?

Any photo or image can be taken in public for private use or for news purposes without a release. Any photo or image taken for profit or public display
that is not news, requires a release form.
