• Sparking up some conversa

From Conscentity@VERT/THORNY'S to ALL on Thursday, October 09, 2003 11:36:00
I noticed that this base isn't that busy, so I've decided
to see if I could get a conversation going. For those
home studio people out there, let's get some lists of
equipment that you all have. Maybe it'll spark some
good debates or discussion. Here's my current list:

-Gateway 7210 Server -> scsi raid. Very nice for
    for recording.
    -MidiMan mixer.
    -Audiobuddy.
    -Ensoniq ASR-10
    -Roland XP-30
    -Red Sound Dark Star
    -Korg Poly 800II
    -Roland SH-09
    -Fender Strat(basic)
    -A bunch of assorted mics
    -Panasonic 3700 DAT
    -Alesis D4 Drum Module
    -Alesis 3630 Compressor
    -Alesis Metavox-Vocoder
    -Sound Forge
    -Acid
    -Cubase

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. It did
remind me that I needed to get a new mixer. Anyone
out there have a favorite compact mixers they can
recommend? Has anyone tried the new Tapco 6306?
I've heard it's supposed to be quite a good mixer.

Being a DJ, I have the following set up in my living room:

Rane MP 24z Club Mixer, 4 channels, switchable xfader etc
    Denon DN-1800F dual CD deck
    Technics SL-1200MK2, two
    Odyssey Gear Combo-Case DJ Coffin

on my Windows 98 PC, I have:
Creative Labs SBLive Platinum with the front panel that has direct RCA input jacks...

When I stream I run it through WinAMP on the Win98 machine, using 1/4" to RCA cables from the mixer to the front panel of the sbliv .. works pretty well.
    =)

just thought I'd do my part to spark some convo =)

I'm setting up a box to do some recording but I'm on a serious budget. So far I have Cakewalk guitar studio and I'm looking for a reasonable mixer for both the guitar and mikes. I've seen a Behringer Eurorack MXB1002 for about $99.00 which looks like it will suit my purposes. I can use my POD for DI on the guitar.

I like Mackie, but I'm not sure if they even make a $99 mixer. Probably.

How do you like that Denon? I've been up and down about purchasing one, or using something like Traktor / BPM with a digital controller.

Even though Mackie doesn't really make a hole lot of studio style recording mixers ( and they make some ) I found that using one of there smaller 16 channel mixers with fruityloops, and soundforge was just as good. any additional hiss I might have found due to the low quality of the mixer; was removed with soundforge directx plugins... it worked great, and no one could tell the differance. But running a software studio can really drain on system resources... I wouldn't run that shit with anything less then 256 megs of ram.

I can't say enough good things about Behringer .. the mackie version of that mixer is twice as expensive, and just doesnt sound as good.

Some really dont ever think of how noisy a place inside a PC is.. hard disks spinning at incredibly high rpms (motors, big cause of noise), fans, oscillators, basically every electrical noise generator at work. Just switching to an external interface via usb / firewire can get rid of most, if not all of your hiss and buzzes. That with a good power conditioner and you've got dead channels.

Behringer makes a Denoiser, runs about 70 - 80 bucks. 2 channel, I run mine left & right. It does a great job of saving me from getting rid of pops or sacrificing the 15-20k spectrum on my synths.
