• Church Sound Board Picking up Radio

From Hatton@VERT/THRCORN to All on Sunday, February 28, 2021 18:39:01
Back around Thanksgiving I helped our church identify and install a new video streaming setup... and became the de-facto operator of the system. Part of this also apparently included taking over the sound system as well.

It's actually quite a nice setup, the main board is a Mackie DL1608 that we can control either by computer and there are a number of wireless and wired microphones. It's with the latter that I've found a problem.

While remoted into the system I discovered that 4 of the longest wire-runs are somehow picking up a local radio station. I am able to mute them as they aren't currently used but need to figure out a way to get them back in service. The runs are roughly 90 - 100 feet each and I don't know what kind of wiring was used for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on filtering out the signal?

    Thanks!
    Hatton

You're using balanced XLR mic cables? https://www.prosoundweb.com/in-the-studio-preventing-hum-and-rfi/

    Interesting!

In HAM Radio, sometimes wires will pick up a hum, and a ferrite band
will usually fix it. It's the same thing you use to 'filter' a phone line
that is used for DSL modems, so you might have one around to try...

I googled it - also called a Ferrite Choke - here's a link to what I'm referring to...

making sure the ground/shield on the cables is right is the first thought i have... if it isn't, all kinds of signals can bleed in...

    Thanks for all the responses!

DM / Rampage: I know the runs are XLR cables but am unsure beyond that; I'll have to do some more research. Definitely worth digging up a floor plate and pulling the plug off the board to check.

Jimmy: I believe I have a pack of ferrites laying around, I'll see bring those when I take the screwdriver!

    Thanks again!

I'm having a similar problem with the PC Speakers hooked to my BBS Server. It's a faint background sound (just enough to be annoying) And I have no control over the volume of it. I can turn the speaker volume up and down and the volume of the music never changes.

Picking this thread back up as I was finally able to get into the building and do some testing.

Note, this is just for the "worst offender" line. I believe I've isolated the issue to somewhere in the line between the microphone and the XLR jack. I finally got to where the jack is and unplugged the mic and there is no excess audio.

Looking at the line, it's super thin and there's a section where the rubber/sheath is gone so the ground wire looks exposed. It was also coiled up and zip-tied. Spreading the cable out made no change so now I'm going to need to go back and test with the ferite.

At least I don't have to go chase the wire from the box to the board... at least I hope I don't.

I remember using my sister's record player in the basement of our house in
the olden days and got radio playing through it. Radio frequencies always interfering with something else.
