I have never recorded directly into a mixer, however I've needed a similar pro duct to match impedance on a friend's "amp." While he was saving up money
for a nice amp, he would use a mic input on his father's old tube stereo. I built a hi-lo box from instructions out of a Craig Anderton book. I also
made a pedal similar to a Way Huge Red Llama using a 4049 hex inverting
    buffer IC.

I've played electric guitar casually at home for a long time. I hadn't heard of a DI box until you mentioned it recently. But I've never recorded in a studio or anything like that.. Mainly just plugged into an amp at home, or sometimes into my PC to do recording on my PC.

Bass players, especially, know these devices from playing gigs where you want to be heard (through the house P.A.).

Now there is also a DI box called the Rockman which uses an electric guitar to a mixing console.

A buddy of mine had the Scholz Rockman with the belt clip. For practicing,
it provided that awesome cranked amp sound without the heavy amp. Sounded awesome with headphones, but I do recall it had slider switches for things
like impedance matching to go through an effects loop or go direct into a board. Scholz also made a rackmount version.
