From Pyro@VERT/DARKPRTY to All on Friday, July 12, 2002 11:47:00
I have a friends band that is interesting in recording a CD, but they don't want to pay the High studio costs, I am looking for a list of the equipment they would need to record the tracks themselves, Any help on this?

I've had decent results with it. It really depends on the hardware in your computer. Save your work often. (It runs in windows.) :-)

A lot of the equipment list would solely depend upon the budget. Typically, the better the sound the more it costs. However, with the right choices you can make a 'great' sounding recording on 'decent' gear.

The items needed at minimum would be:

    1- Mixing Board
2- Multi-track Recording Device (ADAT(s), Hard Disk, Analog, etc)
    3- Microphones/Cables
    4- Effect Unit(s)
    5- Compressor(s)
6- The best possible sounding location for the instruments.

This list can be shortened if you buy gear that combines some of the list (ie. Mixer with FX on-board, Hard Disk Recorder and Mixer combo, etc.)

Probably the two most important items on the list are #3 and #6. These two alone control mainly how the sound will be 'heard' by the recorder, whichever format you are using. Microphone selection and placement are the real skills of the great Audio Engineers.

All of this comes with Powertracks Pro Audio, with the exception of #3 and #6.

    :-)

Just depends on how good is the soundcard.

Of course it does, but recording through a sound-card is less than ideal. Not only for quality reasons, but for the fact you can only record a couple tracks at a time. For most bands you would need at least 7-8 inputs available for the first recording pass.

If you had a break-out box like the MOTU 2408 or something then it would be a better solution for recording a band.

If you get something like the m-audio quattro
USB audio interface and software like Powertracks
or Cakewalk sonar, you can record it. Without
a mixer you can have the band record it one track
at a time. I've worked with a band who did this
and it seemed to work quite well.
