Just a question from a small studio owner in a little town....how much has the advent of computer based direct to disk recording affected you? I've seen a gradual decline in interest locally (in recording at a studio setting), so much that I've moved my equipment out of the rental space and into my basement. Now, I mostly rent my mics (my Neumann required me to be with it at all times <g>), and perform.

    Oh well

Does Pro-Audio mean like Car Stereos and Home Stereos?

No, Pro-Audio is a term used in the music and audio recording industry. It usually refers to equipment used by people in the recording industry. Typically 'better-than-consumer' grade equipment.

And for anyone wondering why this sub is here, both Rob and I both have a mu playing and recording background. Not too much traffic here though.

Not much for me personally. I have a 16-track digital studio, but I don't allow computers in there (too noisy and unreliable). :-)

I think, more any anything, the advent of cheap hard disks and digital mixers/recorders has enabled musicians/producers like me to have their own digital studios.

The advent of hard-disk recording with Pro-Audio quality has severely changed the the entire Audio Industry. Even before the computer, the Alesis ADAT almost single-handedly revolutionized the recording industry.

When I started recording it was strictly an Analog process. Shortly after came the "ok" sounding ADAT and then it's all been in a constant state of evolution ever since.

The last studio I worked at was shut down mainly because of the trend in home-based recording. It's hard to compete with the guy in his basement charging $20.00 per hour. The cost of ownership and operation of 24-Track Studer Tape Machines, SSL and Amek consoles, and lots of other high-dollar gear requires an hourly rate way above what some local band is going to pay most of the time.

The location of the studio will definitely play into if you can charge a fair price and make it worth operating. If you're in a market with lots of local buzz and a few national acts, you might be able to make a traditional (old-school) studio profitable.

I sold a lot of my gear normally housed at the current studio of employment and I just Freelance at several studios in town now. Less headaches all around and makes my schedule a little free'er.

Hehe... You just need to make a Machine Room! Seriously, I bet 90% of all the recording I do today is with 24bit Hard-Disk via a Pro-Tools system. I still try to keep it as Analog sounding as possible by using good microphones and pre-amps, and most of the time I am very happy with the results. The capabilities non-linear editing and mixing offer is an extremely powerful tool for the Recording Engineer.

I agree. I know *many* bands/songwriters who have their own setup at home these days. Lots of them bring me products they've recorded at home for pre-production listening and inspiration. Some of them actually sound pretty good too :)
