If I wasn't happy with my Pi, I'd be tempted myself. But I like running my BBSs locally.
The one thing about not hosting lolcally is that it is dependant on
your local power, ISP provider, and bandwidth. Having it in a
datacenter can alievieate those issues...
Yep, there are pros and cons either way. It's good to have options. :) My situation is:
Power for a Pi is miniscule. Reliability is always an issue, and backup power won't help, an outage will take out the VDSL node down the road anyway. But if I put a USB 4G dongle on the router as backup Internet, that would keep IPv4 connectivity (via the OpenVPN tunnel) working. One advantage with being local is that nodelist management is easier (for my Othernet), because I can edit the master nodelist on my Windows PC, and the BBS can do the automated weekly processing on a mounted SMB share, then hatch the nodelist and infopack. :) It would be trickier to do over the Internet, though not impossible.
Data volume is unlimited here anyway. Not that a BBS uses much. Data rate is effectively around 30Mbps symmetric, because of the properties of the VPN tunnel and endpoints. My ISP is pretty geek friendly too. :)
But if I find myself needing to host offsite, I know where to go. :)
... I find circuses a little too sinister.
