i run my bbses on a rented server.

it's better and i dont have 3 computers here.
fast, better, attackers dont hit my home connection.

    lots of benefits.
Sounds like a damned good idea. I hate the idea of running an eight core processor 24/7 at home. Does the rented server companies allow instances
of windows 32 bit so we can run door games?

It's allot cheaper to run a linux VPS.

I run outwest BBS on a windows 7 32 thin Client PC and the razzpie BBS on a (you guessed it) Raspberry Pi 3
I do run a VPS for other stuff using ubuntu 14.04 @ $3.50 per month 20GB SSD
The VPS companies will allow you to spin up a windows server but for allot more $$$

Yep, and the nice thing about Synchronet is that it's pretty portable, with exception of the DOS specific stuff.

I use SlyEdit, Tickit, and Binkit now; they're all written in Javascript so they work within Synchronet whether it's running on Windows or Linux.

...But, I'm probably preaching to the choir. :)

I just run a Pi. :D If I want to run DOS doors, I could migrate to Linux or Win32 on one of the multitudes of netbooks I have here - I'm running Magicka on one of those. :) Or simply build a door server or use the ones already out there.

i selected an image of proxmox as the OS so i just upload my isos and run whatever OS i want and link it to one of my ips. it's easy to do for windows, linux requires me to edit a few files.

i tried using vpses but they had connectivity problems. so i had my irc network on there and everyone would dump at the same time. i got off that in one day. also my bbses would be flakey. they were spreading themselves too thin. i used fdc and chicagovps and a few other guys

Just use dosemu (or doesmu2) for DOS door games. You don't need Windoze for that!

I haven't had connectivity issues in a long time. I'm using impactvps right now, and they're doing a decent job for me. I also used chicago vps a few years back, and they were ok back then, but a bit pricey. If I remember correctly, it was a Windows 32-bit vps.

I agree. On linux you can run native mods as well as dos mods. Best of both worlds...

There are some Win32 BBS doors though. I'm not sure how easy it is to run those in Linux.

Nonsense! There are pretty detailed instructions on how to do it. For a first-timer compiling Synchronet, I'd suggest Debian or a derivitive like Ubuntu, since the wiki is geared towards that.

WWIV is pretty easy as well, and the directions are pretty easy as well.

That being said, there are precompiled Linux binaries for both, so I don't see why you couldn't run on Linux anyway!

How did I not know dosemu2 was a thing?

I'm going to have to try it out, as I'm running into a couple issues with dosemu and its virtualization with different door games.
