    I bought this guy - http://www.jr.com/pogoplug/pe/PGG_POGOB01/.

I paid way more for mine. Although I may buy another one. I really
want the rasberryPI but its not out yet.

AFAIK, it looks like it's pretty difficult to brick them as long as you follow the guides you should be good. And hey, it's only $25, worst case (and really, from what I read, you'd have to try REAL hard to mess it up that bad). Note that Synchronet doesn't run on ARM as far as I know, so don't get any ideas of running a BBS off it.

Sad that's exactly what I wanted to put on it. This is way I'm not
sure I want to run Ark. I was searching for a compiler for the
pogoplug so I could build a tool chain. The default OS is extremely
limited because of the lack of tool chain. Lately I haven't devoted
much time to it because I moved into a house and now I have way too
    many chores.

The funny thing is, if you don't compare the graphics, the PogoPlug and the Rasperry Pi are basically the same specs. That and on top of the
cost of the Pi, you might want a case, then you need a power adapter
too. Lots of hidden costs to it. It's a project I find very
interesting, but if you're looking for a low-cost ARM based server, the pogoPlug can already do most of that via ArchLinux for ARM. I haven't revisited it since playing around with it after my initial purchase.

I've been off the BBS's for awhile mostly chores at my house when I get free time.

I got mine and its up and running. its been going for awhile. I'm pretty happy with this little device. Its running a php bbs and a media server right now. I tried to compile mono and although I let it run fo ra few weeks it never completed. I guess I'll have to find a cross compiler or something like that.

Do you know any tech tricks to compile large projects?

I love having more control over the device compared to the pogo software, but it would be nice to run both my software and pogo's.

Trying to get a hold of that RasberryPi has been impossible. The video capabilities are a mega desire. That way I can strap it to the back of my TV or monitor. They would make a great low cost desktop as well.

i wanted to get one to use at my gfs house so i wouldnt have to bring my wdtv over. the thing is, i think i'd just rather get another wdtv than WAIT for raspberry pi and then get a sd card, case, power supply an setup xbmc on it.

if you factor in the hassle it's expensive.

DynDNS recently stopped offering their free
service and are now charging a monthly fee. Are you a paid
subscriber? I've no idea if they grandfathered the existing free
    accounts.

Their decision caused some consternation across the net. Quite a few routers (including mine) include a built-in DynDNS function. It'd
sure be nice to use it without having to pay. :p

When I had a broadband router (draytek) I could put in the setting my dynadns free account, but as you say they stiffed is all and are now charging. Now I have switched to a 1gigbit fibre connection, and the fibre router also has dynadns and some other obscure DNS charged services, so I use DTDNS. but
my machines and servers are macs. so there is no client so I use a web link to update my dtdns account eg www.dtdns.com/api/autodns.cfm?id=***DOMAIN NAME***&pw=**PASSWORD**&Client=MACOSX10.9.2%27

which updates my settings without using the router.
I have the address set as a home page and the server is set to open the page
on start-up. so if a powerfail occurs the server auto restarts and updates dtdns.

Give them a go they will also host any domains you own so you can freely
assign the domains to any IP address quickly. for a minimal fee of course.

you are paying to use their dns server. you could do that for free with your registrar or cloudflare or any other place.

i believe he dropped it down to 20 from 30. when my dsbbs.net [i took it

It was very old feeling (comparing to BBSs at the time) and was more of a status symbol for people to have a Compu$erve account. There were a good number of people on it, but it was sort of just running on momentum at that time.
