I bought this guy - http://www.jr.com/pogoplug/pe/PGG_POGOB01/.
I paid way more for mine. Although I may buy another one. I really
want the rasberryPI but its not out yet.
I've been off the BBS's for awhile mostly chores at my house when I get free time.AFAIK, it looks like it's pretty difficult to brick them as long as you follow the guides you should be good. And hey, it's only $25, worst case (and really, from what I read, you'd have to try REAL hard to mess it up that bad). Note that Synchronet doesn't run on ARM as far as I know, so don't get any ideas of running a BBS off it.
Sad that's exactly what I wanted to put on it. This is way I'm not
sure I want to run Ark. I was searching for a compiler for the
pogoplug so I could build a tool chain. The default OS is extremely
limited because of the lack of tool chain. Lately I haven't devoted
much time to it because I moved into a house and now I have way too
many chores.
The funny thing is, if you don't compare the graphics, the PogoPlug and the Rasperry Pi are basically the same specs. That and on top of the
cost of the Pi, you might want a case, then you need a power adapter
too. Lots of hidden costs to it. It's a project I find very
interesting, but if you're looking for a low-cost ARM based server, the pogoPlug can already do most of that via ArchLinux for ARM. I haven't revisited it since playing around with it after my initial purchase.

happy with this little device. Its running a php bbs and a media server
Trying to get a hold of that RasberryPi has been impossible. The video capabilities are a mega desire. That way I can strap it to the back of my
TV or monitor. They would make a great low cost desktop as well.

I can't get hold of one either. I want to send one into space on a balloon.

I got mine and its up and running. its been going for awhile. I'm pretty hap with this little device. Its running a php bbs and a media server right now. tried to compile mono and although I let it run fo ra few weeks it never completed. I guess I'll have to find a cross compiler or something like that
Do you know any tech tricks to compile large projects?
I love having more control over the device compared to the pogo software, bu it would be nice to run both my software and pogo's.

DynDNS recently stopped offering their free
service and are now charging a monthly fee. Are you a paid
subscriber? I've no idea if they grandfathered the existing free
accounts.
Their decision caused some consternation across the net. Quite a few routers (including mine) include a built-in DynDNS function. It'd
sure be nice to use it without having to pay. :p

Hi, DTDNS.NET offer 5 free account although you have to use one of
their domains. you can add your own domain for a fee and with your on domain they can offer port redirection for port 25 if you require it.

I have programs running on my computers for various subdomains and
domains (setxchat.net for the BBS, setxbbs.synchro.net as a backup,
and another running on my home network as a subdomain on
setxchat.net). I was just commenting that it would be nice to use the program on the router.
For instance, a while back I was trying to reconfigure my linux setup
and completely hosed the system... I didn't have any recent backups
(oops), and didn't perform a backup because it should have been a
simple install/uninstall of programs, except for a dumb selection.
Anyhow, I reinstalled the entire system, but forgot about setting up
my ...domain pinger? Whatever that thing's called...lol.

i wouldnt use dtdns for a pay dns service unless you're using the port forwarding feature. othewise it's a bit of a rip off. ace from datastream wa doing that and i never understood why.
anyways, you can use namecheap's servers and use one of their dns clients to update your ip.
I suppose its all relative. I have used them for years and found support fast and I didn't think they there were expensive

I've had good luck pointing a CNAME to my synchro.net DDNS address.
