I just moved my BBS (and my family) to the California coast, near Santa Cruz. We're definitely out of the San Francisco bay area, but traffic in Silicon Valley has gotten so bad that I can get from here to work about as quickly as I could get from the middle of the valley to work.

And real estate isn't crazy. in Silicon Valley, houses are selling for 30-50% over asking price!

Hey there! KD3net is located in Pawtucket, RI. I started the board because I never used a BBS back in the day and really didn't understand what they were or how they worked. I had computers through my childhood, but never a modem until about 1995, and even then I had no idea what I could do with it. If only I had known what kind of cool stuff was out there.

Anywho! I have learned quite a bit since early 2014. I first installed Mystic, got it up and running locally, but for some reason could not access anything from off the local machine. So I kept looking at other software out there and thought Synchronet looked really easy to install for a first timer.

I never thought I would be running the board this long, but I really enjoy it, even if I don't get a lot of traffic.

Shodan's Core (when it isn't crashing it's hard drives) is in Prunedale, CA which if you google it, is just north of Salinas, and about 15 minutes se of Aptos where Pointdexter is now residing. pF lives in the area I grew up in, keep meaning to visit him someday to shoot the shit.

Yep, I'm in Aptos, near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

I just drove past Prunedale on a trip down to Paso Robles. We should meet up some time. There's a Fido sysop in Capitola, but I've got him marked as down -- haven't been able to poll for some time. I think he was my locksmith when I moved into the new house. :)

Dude, SCBB is on the other side of town, and you know it. Also it's referred to as "The Walk" to locals because you'd be goofy to drive down there. (kidding, I have no idea if there's slang for it these days)

Might be someone I knew from my Atari ST BBS Days.

I gotta fix my FTN feed, for some reason none of my message packets are getting tossed onto the BBS. Maybe if you come by you can take a look at it.

Unfortunatly Fallout 4 came out last night and I've only had like 6 minutes to watch the intro, and now I'm stuck at work. :P Gonna be a long day.

I'm still trying to call it Ap-TOSS instead of Aptose. :)

Yeah, you gotta call it toss or people will snub you for life. No idea why
it's Aptose and not Aptos, maybe it's just someone being snooty a long time ago and it just stuck.

No. Did he have a handle?

Yeap. Latest'ish build off CVS usually. I think sbbsecho is fucking up, but i'm really being lazy about fixing it. Besides QWK packets are still working OK, so losing the FTNs is not a huge priority fix at the holidays.

What's it like in CA? I suppose that no 2 neighborhoods are the same? Is there violence everywhere? Is it safe to go outside?

I was living in NM for the past 7 years, and being the prejudiced guy that I am, I assume that all of the western states are dangerous?

I moved back to the northeastern states a couple months ago, and people here are so amazing, and I love it.

Sunny, cool, rarely rains, 5 minutes to beach, few hours to snow. This area is rural, lots of crops (We're known as "The Salad Bowl" because of the shear variety of crops in the area), and farms. Most of anything south of the Bay Area and North of LA is crops and farms. Bay area is a high tech city. Pretty dirty, our highways are a joke these days (litter everywhere). North of the bay and further east is usually redwood forests, mountains. They call Napa "Wine Country", and if you drove around there you'd understand why (Vineyards as far as you can see). So yeah, I'd say no 2 neighborhoods are the same.

Tons of violence, but if you don't act like an idiot it tends to stay away from you.

Not safe to go outside or visit, AT ALL.

I was living in NM for the past 7 years, and being the prejudiced guy that I am, I assume that all of the western states are dangerous?

    True, stay away.

I moved back to the northeastern states a couple months ago, and people here are so amazing, and I love it.

I've visited on a couple occasions in my life, much less violence, much more friendly people.
